Theatre

The Odeon Theatre is the town’s major theatre venue. It has been recently refurbished. It is host to several productions of visiting theatre companies and music groups.

The alternative theatre Culture Power Station Harz or Kulturkraftwerk Harz is housed in a disused powerstation. Being run by volunteers, it produces contemporary theatre, comedy and hosts mostly alternative cultural events. Here the annual Goslar Fringe Culture Days are held from the start to mid June.

Sports

Situated at the foot of the Harz hills, Goslar offers a great deal of outdoor pursuit, from swimming to rock climbing; from motor sports and aviation to sailing and cross-country biking.

The oldest and most traditional sports club is the MTV Goslar (founded in 1849). Its main facilities, a football pitch and gymnasium are located at the Golden Meadow (Goldene Aue) site.

The football department of Goslarer SC 08 earned the right to play in the fourth division Regionalliga Nord in 2009-10 after winning the Oberliga Niedersachsen championship.

Celebrations and Events

In the year 2006 Goslar hosted the Salier Year to celebrate the foundation of this ancient German Imperial dynasty a millennium ago.

Goslar is situated at the boundary of the temperate, no dry season, warm summer CfB) and the cold, no dry season, warm summer (Dfa) climate zones. This can be attributed to the fact that the centre city lays on the very southern edge of the Northern German plain, where just South of Goslar the Harz Middle Mountain Range arises, which can see temperature differences between 2 (3.6F)-5 °C (9 F) between the Old Town of Goslar and the hilltop resort of Hahnenklee.

The temperatures range from as high as 21°C (70 F) during July to as cold as an average of -4°C (24 F) during between January and February. The driest spell is from February until May, where during the summer month, the traveller can expect more rain, usually as showers. Some heavy downpours can be expected during thunder storms and hikers are advised to stay clear off river gorges, open fields and exposed forest areas during such thunder storms. The summer lasts usaully from June to early September. The daylight periods range between 16.40 hours on July 21st (between 4.59 AM and 9:39 PM) and 7.34 (between 8:35 AM and 4:09 PM) on December 22nd.

The winter in Goslar starts in November and usually end in mid-March. The districts of Goslar in the upper Harz, some 500 meters (1,600 feet) above the town’s centre might see some prolonged snowfall well until mid-April. In addition, it can be rather windy on exposed mountain tops so that snowdrifts can be a common occurence. Aside there is a substantial windchill factor in the higher ranges of Goslar.

The most pleasant season for a visit to Goslar is the autumn, when the trees of sourrounding hill and mountain ranges display their colourful foilage, and spring, around the Easter vacation, when the outlaying meadows and the Goslar public gardens begin to bloom.

Geography

Goslar is situated in the middle of the upper half of Germany, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Brunswick and about 70 km (43 mi) southeast of the state capital, Hanover. The Schalke mountain is the highest elevation within the municipal boundaries at 762 metres (2,500 feet). The lowest point of 175 m (574 ft) is near the Oker river. Geographically, Goslar forms the boundary between the Hildesheim Börde which is part of the Northern German Plain, and the Harz range, which is the highest, northern-most extension of Germany’s Central Uplands. The Hildesheim Börde is characterised by plains with rich clay soils – used agriculturally for sugar beet farming – interlaced with several hill ranges commonly known as the Hildesheim Forest and Salzgitter Hills. In the northeast the Harly Forest stretches down to the River Oker, in the east, Goslar borders on the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Immediately to the south, the Harz range rise above the historic borough at a height of 636 m (2,087 ft) at Mt. Rammelsberg. Extended forests dominate the landscape. The major rivers crossing the municipal boundaries are the Oker with its Gose/Abzucht and Radau tributaries. The eponymic River Gose originates approximately 9 kilometres (6 miles) south-west of Goslar at the Auerhahn Pass (638 m (2,093 ft)) east of the Bocksberg mountain. At the northern foot of the Herzberg (632 m (2,073 ft)) it meets the smaller Abzucht stream, before it flows into the Oker. The Dörpke and Gelmke streams also flow from the Harz foothills to the south into the Goslar municipal area, where they discharge into the Abzucht.

Исторический город Гослар

Гослар богател и рос, и вскоре обрел имперский статус. А это означало, что город вышел из-под влияния местных властей, жил сам по себе и подчинялся только императору. Как известно, императоры не жили вечно, а время от времени меняли друг друга, либо пав смертью храбрых в бою, либо став жертвами отравления или вероломного убийства. Товарищи редко умирали сами. Город же оставался, и многие из императоров Священной Римской Империи любили в нем пожить, или, на худой конец, хотя бы устроить рейхстаг. If you own a plane, a helicopter or even a flying saucer then you might wish to land at the club airport Salzgitter-Drütte in the immediate vicinity (24 miles) of Goslar or the Brunswick-Wolfsburg Airport. Maybe try the disused military airfield at Goslar itself, but don’t get yourselves into trouble over this.

However, as a lesser mortal you need to take a plane into either

Goslar can best be accessed by regional trains from Hanover or Brunswick. In Hanover, Hildesheim and Göttingen there is access to Germany’s ICE (Inter City Express) network. Getting to other cities might require changes along the way, often in Hildesheim, Salzgitter or Kreiensen.

From Paris/London/Brussels/Cologne you take the autobahn A44/E331 to Kassel and take the A7/E45 in the direction Hamburg at the Kassel intersection. For further directions see below.

From Madrid/Rome/Vienna/Zurich/Munich/Frankfurt take the A7/E45 and leave it at either the interesection Seesen. Take the bundesstraße B248 and then the B82 to Goslar. If you wish to take the route via the Harz mountains, exit the A7/E45 at Northeim and take the B241 via Osterode, Clausthal-Zellerfeld to Goslar.

Coming from Moscow/Warsaw/Prague/Berlin, take the A2/E39 to the intersection Braunschweig and head via the A395 in the direction of Bad Harzburg. At Vienenburg you leave the A395 and take the B241 to Goslar.

Arriving from Amsterdam/Düsseldorf/Ruhr Basin take the A2/E39 to Hanover and at the Intersection Hanover leave the A2/E39 and take the A7/E45. For further directions, see below.

Coming from Copenhagen/Stockholm/Oslo/Hamburg/Bremen/Hanover you take the A7/E45 in the direction Frankfurt. You exit the autobahn at Rhüden and take the bundesstrasse B82 to Goslar.

N.B. Goslar is a popular destination for bikers who enjoy riding their bikes through the Harz mountains.

Bus services to and from Goslar are relatively frequent and efficient. The regional bus operator Brunswick Regional Transport RBB runs a website , which assists you with finding the relevant connection. In Goslar, their hub is in front of the central railway station. Here you also find a small travel centre, where staff can provide you with further advise. Essentially, the most frequent routes are between Goslar, Seesen, Harzburg-Spa, Salzgitter and Clausthal-Zellerfeld, with less frequent services to other destinations in the Upper Harz (lines 440, 450, 462, 831, 838, 841, 842, 850, 861, 879). The RegioBus lines are the express ones—the others are slow. The handy thing is that the RBB forms a partnership with other regional public transport operators , so that you only have to buy a single transferable ticket. Thus, there is no need to purchase a new one every time you change your train or bus.

Любителям мистики может быть интересно взобраться на самую высокую точку гор Гарц — Броккен (Brocken). Она расположена недалеко от города, хотя пешком, конечно, далековато – 30 км вдохновенного подъема. По преданиям, там в средние века ведьмы собирались на шабаш, и весело праздновали Вальпургиеву ночь.
Сейчас же гора Броккен знаменита прежде всего суровыми погодными условиями – там часто дует сильный ветер и веет морозным холодком. 300 дней в году царит туман, и иногда можно видеть мистическое свечение, если смотреть в сторону от солнца. Этот эффект даже назвали Броккенским призраком, кому интересно читаем Википедию.
